What Is LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy?

LGBTQ+ affirming therapy means your identity isn't treated as the problem to be solved, the thing to be managed, or the elephant in the room. It means your therapist already understands the landscape — the particular weight of navigating a world that wasn't built with you in mind, and the particular kind of exhaustion that comes from having to constantly explain yourself.

As a queer-identified therapist, I don't need you to walk me through what it means to be LGBTQ+. I bring both advanced clinical training in LGBTQIA+-focused therapy and lived experience as a member of this community. What that means for you in practice: we can get to the actual work faster. The work of understanding yourself, navigating your relationships, and building a life that feels like yours.

LGBTQ+ affirming therapy at Love Frequencies Collective is available for individuals, couples, and families — see the services page for session lengths and fees. In person in Mesa, AZ or via telehealth anywhere in Arizona.

Who Is LGBTQ+ Therapy For?

This space is for LGBTQ+ people at every stage of life and every point in their journey — whether you're just beginning to figure things out or have known yourself for decades.

LGBTQ+ Youth

Young people deserve a therapist who takes their identity seriously — not one who treats it as a phase or a question to be resolved. I work with LGBTQ+ youth in a space where they can just be themselves.

Parents of LGBTQ+ Children

Loving your child and not knowing how to show up for them at the same time is more common than you think. I work with parents navigating this — with compassion for both the parent and the child.

If none of these labels feel quite right — that's okay too. You're still welcome here.

If your identity intersects with ethical non-monogamy or polyamory, ENM & polyamory therapy at Love Frequencies goes deep on that work too.

Topics We Can Explore Together

LGBTQ+ clients come to therapy for all kinds of reasons. Here are some of the areas we work through most often.

Identity Exploration

Figuring out who you are — your sexual orientation, your gender identity, how you want to move through the world — is real, important work. You don't have to have it all figured out before you come in.

Coming Out

Coming out is rarely a single moment. It's an ongoing process — to family, friends, coworkers, and sometimes to yourself. We can work through the fear, the grief, the relief, and everything in between.

Internalized Homophobia, Transphobia & Shame

The messages we absorb about who we're supposed to be don't disappear the moment we come out — if we come out at all. Internalized homophobia, transphobia, and shame can quietly shape how we see ourselves, how we show up in relationships, and what we believe we deserve. Naming it and working through it is some of the most freeing work there is.

LGBTQ+ Relationships

Queer relationships have their own dynamics, their own joys, and their own particular challenges. Therapy is a place to work on communication, intimacy, conflict, and connection — with a therapist who understands the context.

Family Acceptance & Rejection

Family rejection is one of the most painful experiences LGBTQ+ people face. And even partial acceptance — the family that loves you but doesn't fully get it — has its own complicated grief. We can work through all of it.

Chosen Family & Belonging

For many LGBTQ+ people, chosen family is everything. Therapy can help you build, navigate, and repair the relationships that hold you — whatever form they take.

Gender Identity & Transition

Whether you're exploring what gender means to you or navigating the process of transition, this is a space to move at your own pace without pressure or assumptions. I provide affirming therapeutic support for both gender identity exploration and transition — and I'll follow your lead.

Grief & Loss

LGBTQ+ people carry particular forms of grief — for relationships that ended because of who you are, for the family you hoped for, for the years spent not knowing yourself. This grief is real, and it deserves space.

Queer Couples Therapy

Whether you're navigating communication, conflict, intimacy, or trust, couples therapy is for LGBTQ+ relationships too — without having to explain your relationship structure to someone who's never thought about it before.

Why See a Queer Therapist?

A lot of therapists will call themselves LGBTQ+ affirming. Fewer are actually equipped to do this work well — and fewer still are members of the community themselves.

Working with a therapist who isn't genuinely affirming can mean spending your sessions in a subtle defensive crouch — managing how much you share, monitoring their reactions, feeling like you have to be an ambassador for your own identity. That's the opposite of what therapy should be.

As a queer-identified therapist with advanced clinical training in LGBTQIA+-focused Emotionally Focused Therapy, I come to this work from both inside and outside the room. You don't have to explain what it feels like to navigate a world that wasn't designed for you. I already know. What I'm here to do is help you understand yourself more deeply, connect more honestly, and build the life you actually want.

That includes bisexual and queer people in different-sex relationships who are often told — implicitly or explicitly — that their identity doesn't fully count, or that they're "really" straight. Your queerness is real regardless of who you're with. Having a therapist who understands that from the inside can make all the difference.

You can read more about my background and approach on the Meet Kerstyn page. For LGBTQ+ community organizations and crisis resources, the resources page has a dedicated section. I'll also be writing about LGBTQ+ identity, families, and relationships on the blog — it's coming soon.
